The Cottars have matured into a powerful trad quintet while retaining their teenage exuberance. The band consists of two brother/sister pairs. Fiona (vocalist) & Ciaran (keyboards) MacGillivray and Roseanne (fiddle) & Jimmy (guitar) MacKenzie. Great instrumental tracks throughout the album, featuring keyboard - fiddle duets, reflect their Cape Breton heritage. The Celtic favorites Home by Bearna and Patrick on the Railway find the band in familiar vocal territory. But it is when Fiona steps out and inhabits the teenage victims of Tom Waits’ songs, Georgia Lee and Hold On and the disillusioned heroine of Sinead Lohan’s, Send Me a River, that the album grabs our attention. Fiona’s phrasing perfectly fits the lyrics and the fiddle interludes reflect their tension. A great album by a group headed for a stellar future but with solid roots to ground them.
