THE CORRSHome After five very successful soft rock albums, The Corrs return “home” to perform some of the great songs and tunes of their native Ireland. While the band shows respect for such classics as Lagan Love, Spancill Hill, Peggy Gordon and Black Is the Colour; the musical treatment is influenced by their pop background. Creative keyboard work by Jim Corr gives a fresh sound to Lagan Love. Spancil Hill has a rhythmic twist that gives it a contemporary pop feeling before Sharon Corr, fiddle and Caroline Corr, bodhran return it to its roots in an instrumental finish. Andrea Corr’s lead vocals show a great appreciation for the lyrics, without being bound by others interpretation. A full rich sound on all tracks is provided by the BBC Concert Orchestra. Two songs in Gaelic and two instrumentals Old Hag and Haste to the Wedding complete the traditional aspect of the album. The other three songs are by composers who are extremely influential in contemporary Irish music. Heart Like a Wheel, Anna McGarrigle; Dimming of the Day, Richard Thompson; and Old Town, Phil Lynotts; which strangely receives the most elaborate orchestration. The album, a tribute to their native Ireland, is an excellent introduction her rich musical heritage. Give it to your children or grandchildren and also enjoy it yourself. |
