MOYA BRENNANAn Irish Christmas
Moya Brennan, the voice of Clannad, gives us an album which is full of charm and surprises. She sings many of our favorite carols: The Wexford Carol, Joy to the World, In the Bleak Midwinter, Angels We Have Heard on High among 12 others. What sets this album apart is the use of musical interludes within the songs that add to their meaning and our listening pleasure. These give the album an upbeat and joyful tone. A particular highlight, which closes the album is Oiche Chuin, (Silent Night) which she sings in Gaelic accompanied by her children on the final chorus.
Simple changes like a pause between Fa and La, La are the beginning of a fresh interpretation of Deck The Halls (with boughs of holly). On God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, she stresses the lyrics avoiding the usually boisterous chorus that generally drowns out the songs meaning. A wonderful Christmas album.
