Best known as a guitar instrumentalist with Solas, the album establishes John as a brilliant singer of Irish folk. The instrumentals reflect John’s career as he duets with Liz Carroll (see In Play reviewed elsewhere) and performs in a brilliant duo with Seamus Egan and John Williams. These musicians also provide instrumental support on some songs. On the vocals, he uses the unique timbre of his voice and his impeccable phrasing to capture the essence of the songs. Standout solo vocals include Gallant Poacher, Captain Gleen, and The Cocks are Crowing. These are complemented by duets with Kate Rusby on Bitter the Parting (which he composed) and Linda Thompson on The Month of January.
