Most famous as the singer with Afro Celt Sound System, Iarla is firmly grounded in the Irish singing style sean-nos. While this is usually performed without accompaniment, he enhances the style through the use of New Age backing. He creates a series of intriguing soundscapes combining keyboards, programming, piano, hammered dulcimer, guitar cello and other instruments as well as spoken word extracts. His voice pierces through all of these with amazing clarity and the sound often reminiscent of the ancient chants that echoed throughout the churches of medieval Ireland.
