ENTER THE HAGGISSoapbox Heroes Although the album contains only one instrumental, the opening track Lancaster Gate; the mix of fiddle, bagpipes, guitars and drums still defines the band’s sound. On this album it is a mix of Celtic, rock and jazz. Particularly notable is a whistle/drum duet on Apothecary. Of the songs, One Last Drink, which owes a narrative debt to Finnegan's Wake is a standout as a great pub ballad. A more downbeat view of drinking is found on the melancholy, The Barfly. Two tracks set forth the bands anti-war stance - No More Stones and Marti’s Last Stand. While most of the band’s vocals rely on tight harmony, Trevor Lewington’s singing on Long Way Home reminds one of Bruce Springsteen. All the songs are original, written either by Trevor or his bandmate Brian Buchanan. |
